Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi can become the prime minister only in a mock Parliament, whereas Narendra Modi will remain the PM in the real Parliament.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a BJP programme, Sarma said Rahul Gandhi's mother Sonia Gandhi desperately wanted him to become the prime minister and all efforts were made to realise her desire.

"Sonia Gandhi strongly wanted to make Rahul Gandhi the prime minister. Many attempts were made; a lot of investment had gone too. She tried her best," he said.

"However, after all efforts failed, the lawn in front of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's quarters was used as a mock Parliament to make Rahul Gandhi the prime minister," Sarma said.

The country's situation is such that Rahul Gandhi will be the PM in mock Parliament and Narendra Modi will remain the PM in the real Parliament, he added.

The opposition INDIA bloc on Saturday held a symbolic ‘public impeachment' of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in a mock Parliament, alleging that the right to vote was under threat as the poll panel was functioning at the behest of the Modi government.
